As Steve Harwell once said, "and they don't stop coming", as is true with the Revolution's acquisitions as of late. The Revolution were able to announce today that the team had reached an agreement with Gimnastic de Tarragona for the transfer of French CDM Wilfried Zahibo, who made 24 appearances in his time with Gimnastic. The 24 year old had previously spent time with Spanish League side Valencia, though he rarely managed to crack the first team.
Zahibo was born and raised in the French city of Marseille, where he also broke into the squad at local Ligue 1 side AC Ajaccio, where he spent the beginning of his career. Zahibo soon found himself playing with the reserve squad at Valencia CF, where he managed to have a fairly successful tenure.
The Frenchman found his way to Gimnastic after a 3-year span with Valencia, and had been continuing to perform at a consistent level for the La Liga 2 side.
In coming stateside to the Revolution, Zahibo brings exceptional strength and great defensive ability to a team that gave up a league-worst 61 goals in the 2017 season, and looks to see consistent playing time, and most likely a starting spot alongside Scott Caldwell in the holding midfield role. With the team, Zahibo will now wear number 23, having had the number vacated by Kei Kamara. The transfer was made possible through the usage of TAM (Targeted Allocation Money), as the league granted each team with a sizable portion of the funds entering the 2017 offseason, and team president Brian Billelo has stated that even more moves are on the way. Once the Revs newest signing passes through the same process as Gabriel Somi and receives his P-1 Visa and ITC, he can finally be added to the official roster.
Now with Zahibo signed, does this rule out the loan move the team originally had planned to pursue with Bolivian CDM Cristhian Machado? As the week unfolded, rumors had circled that the move was confirmed by Machado himself, but a report surfaced that the midfielder had skipped a scheduled physical Monday in Foxboro. Regardless, most fans' attention has turned to the possibility of signing English midfielder Samuel Shashoua from Premier League powerhouse Tottenham Hotspur. The 18-year old has been rumored to be heading to New England for nearly a month now, and head coach Brad Friedel's connections to the club certainly make a move of that caliber likely.
