Marcus Smart to Become a Free Agent as Extension Deadline Approaches, but Will Most Likely Remain in Boston
By: Evan Singleton
Marcus Smart and the Boston Celtics are not expected to come to a contract extension agreement by the deadline tonight. However, that does not mean either party is planning to part ways.
At the end of this 2017-18 season, Celtics' Marcus Smart is going to be a free agent. That said, he is a restricted free agent. Meaning, the Celtics have the right to match any offseason offer that is put on the table.
Just because the two parties cannot agree upon terms as of now does not mean they will not by the end of the year.
In fact, I have been told both Smart and the Celtics would like to continue building upon what they have here. So, I expect them to match an offer in free agency, IF there is no extension in the coming hours.
