With McQuaid and Postma being the extra defenseman at this time.
This is a very solid defensive lineup right now and Krug is an essential part of it. If Torey Krug was traded, there would be no one to put in his place that puts up the numbers he does. I may hate on Krug a lot, but he is untradeable right now. Will he be tradable in the future? Yes. Why will he be tradeable in the future? Because the Bruins have many defensive prospects that will be able to take his place including Zboril, Lauzon, Lindgren, Vaakainen, and many more to come.
Krug is a great skater who has great vision and a powerful shot. He may be small, but he comes with a lot of upside for the B’s. When Krug is caught flat-footed, he is easily beatable. When he is on his game, he makes some pretty good plays. A downside to Krug this season is the fact that he has turned the puck over multiple times a game, some of those turnovers were costly. Although he has turned the puck over quite a bit, I believe he will improve his game throughout 2018 and will continue to work on his defensive play.
Bruins head coach, Bruce Cassidy, said Torey Krug is not tradable right now and that he loves the way Krug plays. Cassidy made it known that he wasn’t happy with Krugs defensive play during the game against Washington, but made it known after Saturday’s game against Ottawa that Krug would not be traded. Cassidy expanded on the fact that Krug needs to keep his feet moving and work on his gap control. Krug responded well to the words of wisdom from Bruce Cassidy and after being benched for about the last ten minutes of play in the game against Washington, Krug bounced back in the game against Ottawa recording two assists.
Torey Krug is a player who can make you jump for joy, or make you want to rip your hair out. He’s so good offensively that many overlook his lack of defensive play. It is only when he makes a costly mistake that fans notice his lack of defensive ability. Part of the reason Krug is struggling this season is the fact that his defensive partner, Brandon Carlo, is going through the “sophomore slump.” When Krug makes a mistake, Carlo isn’t there to fix the mistake which makes the play by Krug seem worse than it actually is. I truly believe Krug needs to be paired with Adam McQuaid again. If Krug is paired with McQuaid, he will be more likely to play to his full potential due to the fact that McQuaid can help erase any mistakes Krug makes. Krugs mistakes were less noticeable last season when he was paired with McQuaid.
All in all, Krug is terrific offensively but needs to work on his defensive game a bit. If Krug finds the right defense partner then we will see him grow as a player and be much better defensively. The B’s can’t trade Torey Krug right now, he is a power play specialist, a puck mover, and brings creativity and offense to this Bruins lineup.
