There are a lot of reports coming from Patriots training camp saying that Aaron Dobson is having himself a strong showing so far. Sound familiar? It seems like we have been hearing that for three years now, only to be disappointed once the regular season rolls around.
It’s crazy to say, but this is a make or break it year for Dobson. Many fans have completely given up hope for the Wide Receiver entering his 4th season. “How can this guy get another shot, he sucks! Dobson? More like Aaron DROPson!” - a majority of fans that all think they are clever. This has always been my biggest gripe with Boston sports fan. Why is that we root for these guys to fail?
Aaron Dobson deserves shot after shot until the coaching staff has completely seen enough. If they have kept him around this long then they are seeing signs of hope. At 6’ 3” with 4.4 speed and massive hands this is a guy we should all be 100% rooting for. If this dude actually figures it out, he immediately becomes the most talented receiver on the Patriots. The same Pats fans that just yell out “deep threat” every time we lose, should be the ones especially rooting for him. Aaron Dobson is the prototypical deep threat. A guy who at only 25 has all the talent in the world.
People forget Aaron Dobson’s rookie year. That year he had 37 for 519 yards with 4 tds. We remember the missed connections he had with Brady, but some of those were errant passes by Brady. Had he connected with a few of those deep balls, those numbers are even better. Remember the Steelers game his rookie year? He looked like a future pro bowler in that game. Injuries derailed him later in the season. Those injuries knocked him out of training camp entering his second year. He never shook off the injury and his second season never really happened. He flashed a few times last year, but again injury took him out.
I have always had a soft spot for guys in Dobson’s position. Laurence Maroney was a classic example of Boston fandom gone wrong. Fan after fan ripped him. The media ripped him. Maroney was a stud his rookie year and tried to battle through an injury. The injury affected his running style, which we labeled as soft and indecisive. We kept saying it and saying it until we sucked every ounce of confidence Maroney ever had. I was legit sad the day Maroney fumbled on the goal line. It was the end of the Maroney era and my Maroney decorated room. Yes I am not ashamed to admit I was Laurence Maroney’s biggest fan. But I am convinced Patriots Nation’s constant hate ruined that guy. In the end we fucked up his head so much he looked like this: Maroney Charged With Misdemeanor Drug Possession
I would hate for us to do the same to Dobson. People need to relax. Some of the comments on Twitter about this guy make me cringe. He’s a professional athlete, not someone that banged your mom. But hopefully he lives up to his awesome potential this year, because if he does he may actually be able to bang your mom.
So good luck Aaron Dobson. I am rooting for you just like I always have.
