Awesome. The NBA Draft Lottery went in favor of the Boston Celtics. The C's finally have a number one, first overall pick. There was a brief period to celebrate in Boston, but now comes the scheming and the strategizing. What do the Celts do with that pick?
This would, however, mean that the Celtics are most likely putting the "win now" plan to bed. Fultz could be a great rookie, no doubt. But he does not put the Celtics into a true championship contending position.
That being said, drafting Fultz puts the Celtics in a great, and i mean great, overall position for both now and the future. This kid can play 2-3 positions, has great intangibles, amazing offensive skill, and is still so young. Fultz, at least in my mind, is the obvious first pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
If they don't draft Fultz, what does that mean? Well, I will call it now... If they are not going to select Fultz, it means they are trading the pick. Which is the second direction I could see this going in. This pick now has so much value. It is not a "probable first overall pick" like it was at the deadline. It is THE first overall pick.
There are plenty of teams that would b willing to dish out talent for a guaranteed first pick in any draft. And this draft has a tremendous, and possibly transcendent, player most likely going to that team with that pick.
Either way, the Celtics are honestly sitting pretty right now. I am incredibly excited to see what the future brings. Whether they draft Fultz and build around him, or trade the pick and try to compete now, They are in a great spot.
The lottery gods were with the Celtics fans tonight... #ItsNotLuck
