I find sports to be one of the most unpredictable unique experiences a viewer or player can ever have. Writing down a concrete idea that you know will beat another team is impossible, especially on a day like today with the big game on the line. As fans we see the coaches, players, and front office execs making all the calls, could there be one man behind the scenes to all this success the Patriots have had throughout the years?
Enter, Ernie Adams the Patriots “football research director”. I put his title in quotations because outside of the Patriots organization no one really knows what he does. Listening to former players talk about Ernie they all said he is like Bill’s right hand man, two great football minds coming together no wonder why they’re unstoppable. Apparently Ernie was the man who told Bill that the Seahawks were going to run that pick play on short yard goal to go situations. The Patriots defense took this vital information and practiced this exact play 100 times prepping Malcolm Butler crashing in and making a stop. I am not saying this one instance makes this man a genius because anyone could determine what the Seahawks do in those situations. What I do believe Ernie Adams brings to the table is simplifying everything for Bill and the Patriots. Ernie is a well-educated man; he graduated from Northwestern and then bounced around in the NFL mainly between the Patriots and Giants (hmm interesting). In 2000 he joined the Patriots and began his reign as the “football research director” guy. Immediately in 2001 the Patriots won the big game, coincidence? I’ll let you decide.
Throughout the day yesterday you probably watched pregame show after program show and all the talking heads yapped about was Brady, Julio, MVP Matt Ryan, their awesome tailbacks, all the way down to the water boys. Ernie Adams is the true X Factor, the Falcons couldn’t game plan for what Ernie thought. Therefore, I think as long as Ernie is around Pats nation will be just fine.
