Will Butcher, the name everyone is talking about in the hockey world right now. If you don’t know who he is, he is a 5’10 190 lb defenseman from the University of Denver. Butcher is from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin and was born in 1995(23 years old). The Colorado Avalanche drafted him in the fifth round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Every year the Hobey Baker Award is presented to the top collegiate hockey player, the most recent winner of the prestigious award is none other than Will Butcher. He captained his team to an NCAA Championship this past season. Butcher was also named USA Hockey’s College Player of the Year and named NCAA First Team All-American. With seven goals and thirty assists for thirty-seven points in forty-three games played, Butcher finished second in the nation in scoring by a defenseman.
If the Bruins do not make an attempt at signing Butcher it’s really no big deal. The Bruins have a lot of depth in the position and it would not hurt the team in any way. The depth is absolutely there and B’s fans should not be too upset if Don Sweeney can’t manage to land Will Butcher.
Let’s take a moment to imagine this B’s team with Will Butcher on it now, and in the future. If Butcher was on the team right now, he would get to learn from a guy like Zdeno Chara and play alongside another U.S. born young stud in Charlie McAvoy. I would love to see Butcher given the shot to play in Boston, not only because he is immensely skilled, but the Boston hockey market would absolutely love him. Now in the future, he would be playing with the same guys he played with in the past. Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo and Will Butcher would make quite the defense in the future. Not to mention Jeremy Lauzon will probably make the roster at some point, but we’ll talk about that on another day.
All in all, I think Don Sweeney should at least attempt to sign Butcher because the upside is tremendous and it wouldn’t hurt to try. Butcher is set to hit free agency tomorrow, August 16. Other teams in the running include the New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres and Las Vegas Golden Knights.
