Marbella, ES-- Today, the Revolution announced the signing of Spanish midfielder Carles Gil from RCD Deportivo La Coruna. Gil, who is 26, has played for a multitude of clubs across Europe most notably his tenure with Aston Villa of the English Premier League in which he tallied 2 goals and 2 assists across 28 matches. In his career, Gil has raked in 10 goals over 168 appearances, and has proven a worthy offensive talent in his time overseas.
Gil’s transfer cost the Revs a hefty $2,000,000, and the Spaniard's contract looks to be the same amount according to sources close to the team. With the amount transferred, Gil becomes the most expensive player in Revolution history, and hopefully signals a sign of good things to come as the Revs look to get out of MLS 1.0 and upgrade to compete with clubs across the league.
Gil’s arrival was much anticipated, as the move had been rumoured for weeks, and Manager Brad Friedel was finally able to seal the deal. The move marks the first big signing for the team during this transfer window, and fulfills the promise made by President Brian Bilello, that they’d be signing at least one new player before the beginning of their preseason schedule, as tomorrow the team takes on Chinese team Shanghai Shenhua.
The terms of his contract list him as a Designated Player, and he’s guaranteed to be with the Revolution for the next two seasons. Gil brings much needed top-flight experience to an MLS roster in need of just that, and looks to showcase his skills in Friday’s preseason match against Viktoria Plzen.
Gil will wear number 22 with the team, and should most likely be starting when the Revolution take on the Columbus Crew in their season opener in March. Take a look at some of his highlights below!
