Most people hear the name Christian Vasquez and think just another player in the Red Sox farm system who gets minimal playing time. This stigma has been created around Vasquez due to his injuries over the last few years, while in reality he is an unsung star. I’ve hyped him for about 3 years now, and truly I have never seen a catcher with a better frame than Vasquez. I respect every catcher in the pros for doing two of the toughest jobs; dealing with pitchers and calling the game behind the plate, and Christian Vasquez excels at both of these aspects.
Second, Vasquez has a true feel for the flow of the game calling pitches. He mixes it up on 0-2 counts, and always has a direct plan to attack the batter. He’s a true student of the game as NESN often shows him in the dugout studying hitters with the pitchers. With the young bullpen the Red Sox have, a guy like Vasquez surely will help.
However the question becomes will he get the starting job this year? My opinion is that he should be a starter, yet I don’t think he will, and here’s why; Sandy Leon’s 2016 season. The hot bat of Sandy Leon last year most likely secured his spot in the lineup as a catcher, because of the consistency he brought to the plate. In my opinion, I don’t think Sandy Leon will replicate last season, or even bring relatively close numbers to the table. This is why I think Vasquez should start; now that he is healthy we will see a consistent .250 out of him and expect nothing more, and receive excellence behind the plate. He is too valuable of a defender to keep off the field, yet I believe he can do a decent enough job at the plate to be a solid all around catcher.
