The 2017 Home Run Derby features some of the game’s best sluggers going against each other, trying to hit as many baseballs out of the park as they can. Here’s my prediction for how this bracket will play out.
#1 Giancarlo Stanton vs #8 Gary Sanchez
Sanchez is the best catcher in the league in terms of raw power, but Stanton is the reigning champ, and should take care of business in this first match up.
#2 Aaron Judge vs #7 Justin Bour
This event is a great chance for Bour to get some recognition for the all-star worthy season he has been having, and while he and Stanton will be the hometown favorites, the fans want to see Judge, the rookie star and likely MVP, dominate.
#3 Cody Bellinger vs #6 Charlie Blackmon
The casual baseball fan hasn’t heard of Blackmon, but they have heard of the Dodgers rookie phenom Bellinger. The crowd will side with Cody, but Blackmon will be looking to make a name for himself and no longer be the 4th most notable Rockies player (behind Nolan Arenado, Carlos Gonzalez, and Trevor Story).
#3 Mike Moustakas vs #5 Miguel Sano
My heart says to go with the Moose, who’s been a fantasy God-send for me this season, but Sano is a big boy who I think will thrive in this environment.
#1 Stanton vs. #5 Sano
Probably 2 of the top 3 sluggers meet in the semi-final, I’ll take the hometown favorite and reigning champ.
#2 Judge vs #6 Blackmon
This is batting practice, and if you’ve watched Sports Center at all this baseball season, you’ve seen what Aaron Judge can do during batting practice. You won’t see Blackmon BP highlights.
#1 Stanton vs #Judge
This is the dream match up the league wanted. The power hitting phenom vs. the power hitting reigning champ on his home field? Both are equally powerful hitters, and both will have the crowd behind them, but this will mean more to Stanton as it is his city.
Champion: Giancarlo Stanton
