Michael Chavis is continuing his hot streak at the AA level, blasting his 26th home run this year between A+ Salem and AA Portland. Chavis is the #3 Red Sox prospect and #8 overall third basemen according to MLB.com prospect watch. He hits from the right side of the plate and currently is batting .311 in the minors this year. Some scouts suggest that his glove might not be MLB ready, yet he currently sits with a .902% fielding percentage this year in the minors.
However, with Rafael Devers ahead of him in the pros, along with the recent acquisition of Eduardo Nunez, where does this place Chavis? Keeping Chavis at the trade deadline this year was certainly a win for the Sox from a depth standpoint, but from a long term perspective it is most likely that Chavis will end up as pawn in a key trade within the coming next few years. That being said, if Devers doesn’t pan out then Chavis will certainly receive a chance in the pros for the Sox.
