The Jimmy G trade rumors are swirling, with reports coming out that the Patriots are asking for a 1st and a 4th round pick for the services of Tom Brady’s 25-year-old backup. Whether or not trading Garoppolo is the best move for the Patriots is a discussion for another day, but assuming they do deal him, where might he land?
Here are a few possible trades scenarios I’d like to see as a Patriots fan (General trades, not taking salary caps or contracts under heavy consideration).
1. Garoppolo to Cleveland for the 33rd overall pick (1st pick of the 2nd round), and Cody Kessler.
Let’s be real, few players in the league are worth a 1st and a 4th. Jimmy G could end up being a great quarterback, but he has only started 3 games. Cleveland is in search of a quarterback and have the picks to make this happen. The Patriots pick up the first pick in the 2nd round, which will likely piggyback their own first round selection. Kessler is included to be Tom Brady’s new backup, or at least compete with Jacoby Brissett for that role. Kessler is very accurate and has some potential to be a solid starting quarterback. He unfortunately plays behind Cleveland’s horrendous offensive line (apologies to Joe Thomas), and has suffered 3 concussions and has been knocked out of multiple games because of it.
2. Garoppolo to San Diego for the Chargers 2nd and 4th round picks.
Here’s the scenario. The Chargers are likely going to fire Head Coach Mike McCoy. The Chargers are likely moving to Los Angeles, presenting new marketing opportunities, and have a solid foundation of young pieces including running back Melvin Gordon, defensive end Joey Bosa, and tight end Hunter Henry. All this is very appealing to Josh McDaniels, who will be a candidate for just about every head coaching vacancy in the league. McDaniels becomes the new head coach of the Chargers, and along with Chargers ownership, decides it is time the team moves on from Phillip Rivers, who I personally still believe can help a potential contending team. The Chargers cut Rivers, and trad their 2nd and 4th round picks to New England for Garoppolo. McDaniels can start fresh with a guy who he believes in and is familiar with his offensive system. Patriots pick up two high picks in each round, and can build around winning with Tom Brady now.
