Its official. Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman set to square off on July 20th. When will Thurman give fans the fight we've been awaiting against Terence Crawford.
It’s just been announced that undefeated welterweight Keith Thurman will be fighting future boxing hall of famer Manny Pacquiao on July 20th.
Despite the rumors and much requested Thurman versus Crawford, boxing fans instead will settle for the 30-year old Thurman fighting the 40-year old Pac-Man.
Pacquiao has been a hot commodity among fighters in the welterweight division. In fact following Errol Spence Jr’s most recent win over Mikey Garcia, Spence called out Pacquiao who entered the ring post-fight to congratulate Jr on his 25th victory. Spence instead used Pacquiao’s appearance to get boxing fans stirring up a frenzy online screaming “Manny, come on over here Manny... he been here before, he broke records, he’s a legend of the sport, and it’d be my honor to fight him next”.
Obviously we’re not talking prime-time Pac-Man at age 40. However when it comes to the pay per view box office numbers... Manny’s still a big ticket to clinch for any fighter. He showed some old school Pacquiao-like offense that we witnessed from 2008 to 2011ish. Yet during his most recent bloodbath of a victory over Adrien Broner. A fight in which battle couldn’t showcase his hand speed and power at age 40, any better.
After that display of an absolute boxing clinic from Pacquiao, Thurman spoke post-fight on a possible fight against Manny stating “I would love to have [the Manny Pacquiao fight]. It could be Brooklyn, it could be Vegas, wherever Manny Pacquiao wants it. I’d fight him in the Philippines if I have to, baby!”.
Put the loss to Floyd Mayweather that was perhaps the most disappointing hyped fight of boxing’s history, undoubtedly in this generation- then an extremely biased decision in Jeff Horns hometown of Australia in which the ref nearly ended the fight via knockout, and you’ve got a 5-0 Manny Pacquiao coming into this fight, well past his prime.
It was fairly unlikely to expect Thurman to take a Crawford fight if the opportunity arose. Following Crawford’s annihilation of Jeff Horn, Thurman chimed in stating “I don’t even know if Terence Crawford can beat Amir Khan. Amir Khan is better than a lot of [Crawford’s] competition lately". Boxing fans would soon discover that take to be false with Crawford out-boxing Khan a few months back to a knockout victory.
All eyes now head towards Errol Spence Jr’s way for the next Crawford fight.
Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao: 60-7-2 (39 KO’s)
Weight: 146 Lbs
Last fight: January 19 vs Adrien Broner (Win)
Keith “One Time” Thurman: 29-0-0 (22 KO’s)
Weight: 147 Lbs
Last fight: January 26 vs Josequito Lopez (Win)
Well while we still await Crawford’s next opponent, we’ve got one of boxing’s best pound-for-pounds set to take on one of the sports greatest to ever do it.
Who you taking come July 20?
