Jesse Gabrielle is a 19 year old 5’11, 204 lb left winger in the Boston Bruins Organization. Gabrielle is from Edmonton, Alberta and was drafted 105th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. He recently agreed to play with the Providence Bruins, so let’s take a more in depth look into who he is as a player.
From 2015-2017 Gabrielle played with the Prince George Cougars of the WHL. In his 2015-16 season he scored 40 goals and recorded 35 assists for 75 points in 72 games played. In his 2016-17 season he scored 35 goals and recorded 29 assists for 64 points in 61 games played. He has also played for the Regina Pats and Brandon Wheat Kings. Jesse has scored 110 goals and has recorded 99 assists for a total of 209 points in 250 games played. Gabrielle is a gritty left winger who isn’t afraid to go to the net. He is also an agitator that is very effective in the offensive zone. He is great on the forecheck and good for recovering the puck, also a good skater and is able to get around larger opponents easily. Gabrielle lead Prince George in scoring as well as penalty minutes. Could he be the next Brad Marchand?
Marchand is 5’9 and 181 pounds. Marchand is described as an agitator as well as Gabrielle. Marchand is a great skater who can also evade defenders with ease. He’s a great skater and has a nose for the net. While playing in the QMJHL Marchand scored 102 goals and recorded 146 assists for 248 points in 245 games played. Marchand also tends to take many penalties as well. I think comparing Gabrielle to Marchand is understandable because of their gritty play, their skating ability and their ability to breeze past defenders and score.
Gabrielle models his game after a former Boston Bruin, a fan favorite. “I was never a guy that wanted to be like Patrick Kane or anything; I wanted to be like Lucic, an energy, hard-nosed player.” He also said “When I watched the Bruins and everyone called them the Big, Bad Bruins, that was sort of the thing that caught my eye. I’ve been a fan since.”
All in all, Gabrielle is essentially a larger version of Brad Marchand. If Gabrielle continues to develop his game then he could easily make his way to the NHL and become a fan favorite in Boston. Gabrielle likes Brad Marchand and likes his style of play, “When I saw Marchand for the first time, watching him throughout his career here, I instantly fell in love with the way that he played.” Gabrielle also knows how great of a skill set Marchand has, “That’s kind of the way that I want to play. I’m not a bigger guy…He’s got a great skill set, that’s kind of what I’ve got to work on. The way that he plays on edge is what I like about him.” Marchand beat the odds and made it to the NHL, we will probably end up seeing Gabrielle beat the odds as well. Gabrielle agreeing to play with the Providence Bruins is a big step forward in his career so it might not be too long until we see him in the Spoked B.
