Before you jump down my throat, I want you to use your brain for a minute. Take your Terry hate out of the equation for one second, please. I promise you, this makes sense if you think about it logically... The question is, can you think about this logically?
Everyone seems to be up in arms about how poorly Terry Rozier played last season. I am not here to defend that. He played poorly. I am not here to defend his offseason antics either. If you want to read about how I feel about that, check out my previous article: "What Do I Make of All This Terry Rozier Drama?"
Today I want to address the "We should have traded Rozier at the deadline!" narrative. It sounds good, sure. Gets a positive reaction out of 95% of Celtics Twitter, understandable. However, if the Celtics had moved Rozier at the deadline, they'd be even more screwed right now...
For starters, Rozier's value was not all that high at the trade deadline. So you'd essentially just be moving him to get him off the team. So get the "oh we could have gotten something good in return" idea out of your head. That was not going to happen.
Now, flash forward, Kyrie Irving is as good as gone. Last I heard, his mind was made up and he's out of town. So, let me ask you this, if Terry was traded and Kyrie is now gone what are you left with at the point guard position? "BUT EV, DUDE, WE'RE GONNA SIGN KEMBA OR DEANGELO, DUDE!" Yeah... maybe... but good luck with that. Talk about putting all of your eggs in one basket... People somehow had that mindset BEFORE Al Horford opted out, BEFORE news broke about Baynes possibly coming off of the books and guess what, it literally wasn't even possible before then... Get it through your heads, the Celtics don't have as much money as you think, and they CERTAINLY didn't prior to Horford and Baynes most likely off the books.
The fact that Terry Rozier is a restricted free agent is AMAZING for the Celtics. Otherwise, they'd be left with nothing. "BUT MARCUS SMART, DUDE." Yeah, you probably think I am forgetting the beloved Marcus Smart. I am not. Marcus Smart and Terry Rozier can coexist, for one thing. We have seen it before. But beyond that, I can see Rozier starting at the one over Smart strictly because Rozier is a truer point guard. Call me crazy, whatever. You're probably going to anyways, simply because this is a pro-Rozier article.
Terry Rozier has had one season of opportunity in my mind. Guess what? He capitalized on that one year. It was ONLY one year, yes I know. I can't argue that it MAY have been a fluke. However, am I asinine to simply believe in the guy? I feel like I am the only Rozier fan left on this ROUND Earth (shot at Kyrie).
End of the day, the Celtics have the ability to match any deal Rozier gets offered and that is a damn good thing. I think Rozier will be back. I think he'll prove many of you wrong. I think you'll be thankful we didn't ship him out for peanuts in return.
