Amongst the bizarre chaos of last night, which included a 5 run 8th inning for the Mariners which led to a Red Sox demise, another misgiving took place. After the dreadful loss(the worst this season in my opinion), Hanley Ramirez decided that he forgot how to walk down a staircase. Yes, the Major League Baseball player Hanley Ramirez may have fractured his wrist falling down a staircase that led to the clubhouse. Now I know that everyone makes mistakes and nobody is perfect, but seriously what the hell? This by far is one of the weirdest injuries I have ever seen in my life, second to Matt Cain of the Giants who once was scratched from a start because he cut his finger making a sandwich. Anyway, the real question is it this injury serious, and what does it mean for the month of August?
Falling down a staircase is certainly a weird injury, but all of us can relate to it. In Hanley’s case, these X-Rays could just be a precautionary measure by the club, and the we should know the results within the week. If the X-Rays come back and show a clear fracture, then that could mean a 3-4 week recovery time. If the X-Rays come back a don’t show a fracture, well then that could mean several things.
All facts aside, what it really comes down to is how he feels swinging which is the most important part. Obviously wrists are extremely important for hitting, so Hanley should wait until he can swing without pain to come back, because if he adjusts one aspect of his swing to counter his pain, then his whole approach could be altered.
If Hanley is out for several weeks, then there is one very simple option. Call up Yoan Moncada. This injury may be the beacon that management needed to realize that it’s time to call up Moncada. Travis Shaw would move to first base, and Moncada would play third. From a managerial aspect, this would be a great time to call him up to get him some playing time at the big leagues, but also hope that he can provide a spark
However, until the training staff releases information of his injury, all we can do is speculate and hope for the best.
