We have all calmed down from the fireworks that popped back in the young days of July. I am speaking about the Celtics signing Gordon Hayward, obviously. However, the question is still present: are the Boston Celtics now the top team in the Eastern Conference?
I will get right to the point, Gordon Hayward does not immediately put the Celtics over the Cavs. However, I think they will get there soon enough. Especially if Kyrie Irving is dealt. I don't believe the Cavs are going to be able to bring in anyone that is better than Irving. I have heard, from a trustworthy source, that Eric Bledsoe would be a definite trade IF the Suns agreed to deal Josh Jackson as well.
So what I am saying is that the signing of Hayward, right now, doesn't make the C's the best team in the East. But it sure as hell puts them in position to be the best team in the East. There is a difference.
If I had to put money on it, yes I believe the Celtics will be the top Eastern Conference team come playoff time. But as we all saw last season, being the number one seed does not earn you a spot in the finals.
So, again, I believe the Hayward signing puts the Celtics in position to be the best team in the Eastern Conference. And I think they will be. However, they are not the clear-cut favorite, yet.
