With the Celtics deal with the 76ers all but official, you know that Danny Ainge is going to try and make another big splash before or at the draft on Thursday night.
Too Many Picks
Here are the current draft picks that the Celtics own for the next few years, including the ones from the deal with the Sixers.
2017 PHI 1st 2018 BOS 1st 2018 LAL (If 2-5) 1st 2018 BKN 1st 2019 BOS 1st 2019 LAC 1st 2019 SAC 1st 2019 MEM 1st 2019 SAC 1st (If LAL pick not 2-5)
Needless to say, that’s an insane amount of first round picks that the Celtics own. They can’t possibly make all of those picks right now and Danny Ainge knows it. First off, the Celtics are, in my opinion, two stars away from truly threatening the Cavs in the East. Danny Ainge has been stockpiling those picks in order to eventually unleash them and land a star.
Rumors Are Swirling
This morning on First Take, Stephen A. Smith stated that before the Celtics and Sixers deal, the Bulls had been in contact with the Sixers about a possible trade involving Jimmy Butler and the number 3 pick. The Sixers weren’t interested in that, but now, the Celtics own that pick and they are interested. If the Celtics were to trade for Jimmy Butler, and move one or two players from the current roster in the deal, the Celtics could still have enough money to sign Gordon Hayward. Adding Butler and Hayward would certainly make the Celtics a threat to the Cavs next season. With all the assets the Celtics have, those two moves could just be the beginning.
Yesterday, it was reported that Paul George is going to leave the Pacers in free agency after next season and wants to join the Lakers, This has sent the NBA into a frenzy and the Pacers are now trying to move PG so that they can get something in return. The biggest rumor right now is that the Cavs are in talks with the Pacers to get Paul George, The Celtics also have assets to get a deal done, but won’t make a deal if they can’t be sure Paul George will sign long term after next season. Hopefully George is not traded to the Cavs because nobody wants to see Cavs Vs Warriors IV.
Celtics Add Another Player
It was announced this morning that the Celtics will sign European big man Daniel Theis.
I have no idea what the Celtics plans are for him, but it makes a trade look that much more likely. The Celtics already have plenty of players they are high on + picks + their overseas players Guerschon Yabusele and Ante Zizic and the Celtics love both of them. Both players could potentially join the team next season in Boston.
The Bottom Line
Danny Ainge is up to something. He has more than enough assets to move to land a star. The Celtics have many pieces teams want and the Celtics can make a deal whenever they want. You have to remember that there is a reason this deal with the Sixers went down so early, it’s because the Celtics are not done. If you are paying attention this morning, you’ll notice that Twitter is very quiet regarding NBA news. Whenever it is this quiet, something is usually going on behind the scenes. Danny Ainge is going to make a big trade for the Celtics sometime this week, I’m calling it now.
