Well there you have it. Sergio Garcia has his first golf major in the bag. Nonetheless, it was The Masters. Sergio, the golfer that would never win a major, now owns a green jacket. And what a finish it was. There were also so many storylines that were tied to Sergio winning THIS year's Masters Tournament.
After 74 starts across all of the majors golf has to offer, Sergio Garcia finally wins a major. Something most people, and even Sergio himself, said he would never do. Nearly 20 years ago, Garcia played in his first Masters. He has not missed one since. That being said, even with all of those appearances it was never in the card for the Spaniard.
However, that has all changed. Garcia beat out Justin Rose in a playoff to take home the green jacket. It was only fitting. One of the great storylines that padded this win was the fact that Sergio was able to pull it off on what would've been Seve Ballesteros' 60th birthday, as he died years ago. Ballesteros was one of golf's greats, we know that. Winning The Masters twice himself. However, he means even more to Garcia. Who claims Ballesteros to be his true golf idol, as he is also from Spain.
Needless to say, Garcia had someone watching over him this week.
He certainly deserved it. Yes, Rose missed a couple putts and had a couple bad shots. But that does not mean Garcia got lucky in any way. He played some serious golf, especially when it mattered most.
Any golf fan can appreciate this victory, Sergio fan or not. This is what is so great about the sport. Anything, and I mean anything, can happen.
Congrats Sergio. This win was due. It has been a long time comin'
