Although it looks like the New York Yankees are running away with the division, they have a lot of games left against the not quite dead yet Boston Red Sox and of course the Rays who are not going anywhere. When the postseason starts the regular season no longer matters, which is why the New York Yankees need to drive their opponents into the ground and add a few more pieces to their 2019 success story.
All 5 of these pitchers are having decent years but guys like Paxton, Happ, Sabathia, and Tanaka could break down at any moment. The question also remains, when is Luis Severino coming back? Their ace all last season has not pitched all season and is rumored to come back in late august. But what if he doesn't? Time to consider to backup plan.
LHP Mike Minor
The Yankees were rumored to have multiple scouts at several MLB games recently and one pitcher they have had their eyes on was LHP All-Star pitcher Mike Minor. He is having a career year and the Rangers are 11 GB and are 3-7 in their last 10. Mike Minor might want out of Texas soon after he was pretty irritated after hearing about some trade rumors. The 31 year would add to some great depth to the Yankees rotation and could shift into a bullpen role in October. With Clint Frazier being pushed back to the minors look for him to be on a lot of teams radars this trade season.
RHP Marcus Stroman
Just like the Braves, Red Sox and a few other clubs, the Yankees have had their eyes glued on the short 28 year old ace of the Toronto Blue Jays. He would fit in great with the New York Yankees and would split up the heavy lefty rotation. He adds even more excitement and skill to this already loaded New York Yankee team. He is only on the books for $7,400,000 this season which the Yankees would only have to pay half off, if that. Prospects like Albert Abreu, Jonathan Loaisiga would have to be on the table. Would they surrender their #1 prospect Estevan Florial for Stroman? TBD.
LHP Madison Bumgarner
The final one on this short list for potential targets for the New York Yankees is perhaps the best postseason pitcher of this generation, that of course is LHP Madison Bumgarner. Although the Giants have been on a surge I think it is time for them to be realistic and move their big pieces while they still can.
He would of course need to waive his no trade clause because the Yankees are on his list of teams that he didn't want to be traded to but I think he can be persuaded to help the Yankees win #28
Who do you think the Yankees should target?
