Quinnen Williams, a defensive tackle for the New York Jets, was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon at LaGuardia Airport on Thursday night after attempting to board a flight with a gun.
Williams, who the Jets selected with its third pick in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, was carrying a Glock 19 handgun, which the police could not determine if at the time whether it was loaded. He was carrying the gun with an Alabamaーhis home stateーpermit, New York/New Jersey Port Authority Police told ESPN, per staff writer Rich Cimini.
The former University of Alabama tackle was processed by the Port Authority Police Department after the incident occurred after 9 p.m. on Thursday.
Williams, who was a consensus All-American after his junior year playing for the Crimson Tide under head coach Nick Saban, was the highest-draft defensive player in Jets history. He signed a $32.5 million fully-guaranteed contract, which included a $21.7 million signing bonus.
Still, the high-drafted rookie did not make as much noise as the Jets organization, and fans, were expecting. Williams played in 13 games and only had 28 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, and did not force a fumble. The big man missed time due to an ankle injury, though he showed positive signs in his game towards the end of the season.
