Mike Piazza walked up to bat against Steve Karsay in the bottom of the eighth, the Mets trailing the Braves 2-1. Shea Stadium was electric; Mike Piazza was the guy fans wanted at-bat down a run late in a game. Karsay pitched a ball that was meant to be away, and the second the ball hit Piazza’s bat, fans knew it was leaving the ballpark.
All eyes were on David Wright on Thursday afternoon, as members of the media and teammates of The Captain sat in on what wound up being an emotional press-conference for No. 5.
The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting cooler, and the NFL is about to kick off their season. Now is the time for playoff contenders to start getting up that head of steam that they need heading into October.
The New York Mets’ National League Cy Young Award candidate, Jacob deGrom, recorded yet another no-decision on Monday afternoon, despite another magnificent outing. It seems almost inevitable that every time deGrom is on the mound, the Mets’ offense will be virtually absent, and deGrom will need to do everything himself.
As the month of August winds down, and we head towards the home stretch of the regular season, the Yankees stand at 82-47, the second best record in all of baseball.
Currently the Yankees are thirty-one games over .500 and in the midst of an exciting season. The Bronx Bombers were predicted to be a championship contender at the start of the season and to this point they have not disapointed. Despite this all I seem to see on twitter and other social media is how much Aaron Boone needs to shake things up or how the team is lifeless. It's not the managers fault that the Red Sox are fifty games over .500. Boone, despite not having his two best hitters for almost a month, has the Yankees right where we thought they would be.
The New York Mets' captain, David Wright, suited up for the Single-A St. Lucie Mets on Sunday afternoon, making his first minor league appearance since Aug. 2017.
August 20th will be an important day in the American league. On that date the AL East leading Red Sox will play the AL Central leading Indians at Fenway Park. What makes it so special is that it will be the first time this season that these teams will have played each other. Four months into the season and two of the best teams in the AL are finally meeting.
After deciding to stay put at the trade deadline (July 31) having dealt Jeurys Familia on July 22, and Asdrubal Cabrera on July 27, the Mets went out that night and lost 25-4 to the Washington Nationals. It was the worst loss in Mets history.
With the 2018 AL East race in the balance, the Yankees need a wake-up call and they need it quickly. The Red Sox have run away with the first two games of this four game series and if New York doesn't find some fire somewhere, they will be playing for second place over the last 50 games.
