Where does Danny Ainge Rank Among NBA GM’s? Is Al Horford Getting the Job Done in the Low Post? Where Should Steven Wright Fit Into the Rotation? This And MUCH MUCH MORE!!!
Despite my disagreement about standing pat at the trade deadline, I still rank Danny Ainge as one of the top 4 current GM’s in the NBA, behind only R.C. Buford in San Antonio, Pat Riley in Miami, and Bob Meyers in Golden State. Hovering on the outside is Daryl Morey in Houston and the Donnie Nelson/Mark Cuban duo in Dallas.
Quiz of the week…Since 1999, the Patriots have drafted 5 QB’s that have thrown at least 1 touchdown pass for the franchise. Name them. Answer near the bottom of the column…
Quote of the week comes from Patrice Bergeron on playing under new interim coach Bruce Cassidy during his interview earlier last week on Toucher & Rich “the biggest change is he wants us to play with more tempo, more speed, and to go to the ice in a hurry”. From fans across New England, “thank you Bruce Cassidy”, it’s about time!
While David Price not needing surgery immediately is a blessing, I’m still betting his elbow causes at least a few visits to the DL before the season is through. Speaking of the Red Sox, after a 13-6 season where he pitched 156 innings (3rd on the team) Steven Wright has earned the right to be the Sox 4th starter entering the season. Wright also ended 2016 3rd in ERA among starters and 3rd in strikeouts.
Count me as at least one Bruins fan welcoming new acquisition Drew Stafford with open arms. During his career, the winger has recorded 14 goals and 15 assists in 48 games against the Bruins.
With the recent Patriots chatter on Bradin Cooks, Kenny Stills, keep in mind that Bill Belichick has never drafted a receiver in the first round. The highest he’s ever picked one? Chad Jackson in the 2nd round of the 2006 NFL Draft.
Al Horford, the Celtics top rebounder, is currently ranked 46th in the NBA at 6.6 boards per game. Just as a comparison, Cleveland currently has 3 players ranked higher with Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, and LeBron. Toronto and Washington also each have players ranked higher with Valanciunas, Gortat, Markieff Morris, and now Serge Ibaka. The Wizards Otto Porter is on Horford’s heels as well, also averaging 6.6 rebounds per game.
If you are wondering why the Red Sox can’t lock up 2016 MVP runner-up Mookie Betts, look towards owner John Henry, who is adamant about keeping payroll under the $195 million-dollar luxury tax threshold. I just hope that ownership realizes that Betts, Xander, and JBJ are all up for arbitration in 2018.
If you’re looking for an NFL comparison for potential #1 overall pick, UNC QB Mitch Trubisky, look at the Lion’s Matthew Stafford. If you’re keep track at home, University of Texas basketball finished the regular season 10-21, its worst record in 33 years. UCONN, at 14-16, just had its worst season in 30 years. On the other side of the coin, if I was casting a vote the NCAA Coach of the Year, it would be none other than FSU’s Leonard Hamilton, who not only finished 24-7 in a loaded ACC but also recorded wins over Florida, Virginia, Duke, Notre Dame, and Louisville .
Don’t look now, but the Chicago Blackhawks are 15-5 in their last 20 games.
