The frame on Vasquez is unlike any other frame in the pros. The way he keeps his elbow bent and flaccid yet firm is true athleticism. Also, he’s been known to be a great team player and a true leader to have in the clubhouse. Vasquez is the type of catcher the Sox need behind the plate to get those corner calls for Sale, and also the guy we need day in day out throwing guys out with his B+ arm and A+ footwork.
However the question becomes will he get the starting job this year? My opinion is that he should be a starter, yet I don’t think he will, and here’s why; Sandy Leon’s 2016 season. The hot bat of Sandy Leon last year most likely secured his spot in the lineup as a catcher, because of the consistency he brought to the plate. In my opinion, I don’t think Sandy Leon will replicate last season, or even bring relatively close numbers to the table. This is why I think Vasquez should start; now that he is healthy we will see a consistent .250 out of him and expect nothing more, and receive excellence behind the plate. He is too valuable of a defender to keep off the field, yet I believe he can do a decent enough job at the plate to be a solid all around catcher.
